Temas

  1. Flauta de pico
  2. Ornamentación / Disminuciones
  3. Improvisación histórica

    Here is an updated CV.

a) Flauta de pico

  • Repertory: from medieval to contemporary
  • Technique lessons: Basic to advanced
  • Instruments: In order to study the recorder repertoire from as many different historical periods as possible, my recorder collection comprises instruments by Fred Morgan, Bob Marvin, Monika Musch and Ernst Meyer. It includes cylindrical recorders, a full Renaissance consort (4’ + 8’), a flauto doppio, “Ganassi-type” instruments, early Baroque models after Van Eyck and Bassano, Baroque recorders after Bressan, Denner, Stanesby, Debey & Bizey, and a modern tenor for contemporary music. This way, demonstrations during the lessons can always be made on the most appropriate instrument. This hands-on experience has proven to be of great help for making technical and interpretative decisions.
  • Teaching experience: Vicente Parrilla holds the chair of recorder at the Superior Conservatory in Seville (currently on leave) and has over 15–years’ experience in working in higher music education. During that period he has built up a recorder class in Seville that has attracted students from several Spanish cities and regions, as well as regular and Erasmus students from Germany, Switzerland and Argentina.

b) Ornamentación / Disminuciones

c) Improvisación histórica

  • Repertory: Renaissance harmonic patterns (ostinati or grounds); cantus firmi; polyphonic pieces
  • Main issues addressed: A concise guide for developing the instrumental, aural and mnemonic skills necessary to bring back to life the improvisational skills that ancient performers once had. A discussion of the skills modern players need to develop in order to cope with the demands of such practice —which are rarely found within the conservatories’ curriculum today— will facilitate the practical aspects required for the practice of improvisation.
  • Background: Critical analysis of historical evidence of such praxis.
  • Main sources: Vicente Lusitano’s Trattato grande di musica pratica (Paris, Bibliothèque nationale de France, Esp. 219)
  • Professional experience: As a performer: my Yr a oydo CD (2010) is devoted to improvisation. Since 2005, I have specialised in historical improvisation as a performer. I am also the author of historicalimprovisation.com, a website that collects relevant information about historical improvisation, and have collected and transcribed a series of Six Transcribed Improvisations on La Spagna cantus firmus. As a researcher, I have just started a PhD in historical improvisation at docARTES Doctoral Programme in Musical Arts (Ghent, Belgium), LUCA Faculty of the Arts and KU Leuven. David Burn, supervisor (Katholieke Universiteit Leuven). Philippe Canguilhem, co-supervisor (Université Toulouse II Jean Jaurès).

About Vicente Parrilla

Since 2018, he has been officially associated with the “Ganassi” research project of the Geneva HEM, organised by William Dongois. He’s living in Fribourg (CH) since October 2019, where he has moved with his partner María González.
